La historia de «Island in the sun»

«Island in the Sun» estuvo a punto de quedarse fuera del tercer álbum de Weezer. La canción no estaba prevista para el disco, pero el productor Ric Ocasek peleó por incluirla, y acabó editándose como segundo single en julio de 2001. En Australia, en cambio, fue el primer single, porque «Hash Pipe» no se publicó allí.

Tuvo dos vídeos muy distintos. El primero, dirigido por Marcos Siega, muestra a la banda tocando en la recepción de una boda mexicana y fue el último en el que aparece el bajista Mikey Welsh. El segundo lo rodó Spike Jonze y los muestra en una colina rodeados de animales salvajes; como Welsh ya había dejado el grupo, solo salen el guitarrista Brian Bell, el cantante Rivers Cuomo y el batería Pat Wilson. En directo también cambió: a finales de 2001 rehicieron el solo para los conciertos, y en 2005 Cuomo solía abrir los bises tocándola él solo con una guitarra acústica desde el fondo del recinto.
