La historia de «Got To Be There»

El debut en solitario llegó con un tema escrito por Elliot Willensky. Se convirtió en un éxito inmediato: alcanzó el número uno en las listas pop y de R&B de Cashbox. La primera vez que Jackson lo cantó en directo fue el 1 de marzo de 1972, en el espectáculo Hellzapoppin', acompañado por sus hermanos. La actuación duraba unos dos minutos y empezaba con una puerta de garaje que se abría para revelar a los Jackson 5. En abril de 1973 se registró otra versión en directo en Japón, de casi cuatro minutos y con una introducción hablada, publicada en el álbum Jackson 5 in Japan.

Los Miracles lo grabaron para su álbum de 1972 Flying High Together, y Chaka Khan también la versionó para su cuarto álbum en solitario. Black Ivory lo versionó en su debut de 1972, Don't Turn Around, como cara B de su sencillo Time Is Love. Boyz II Men la incluyeron en Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA, de 2007. Diana Ross grabó una versión para un álbum de 1973, To the Baby, que no llegó a publicarse entonces; esa grabación apareció finalmente en la edición ampliada de Touch Me in the Morning en 2010.
