La historia de «Another one bites the dust»

La línea de bajo de «Another One Bites the Dust» tiene un origen confesable: John Deacon, bajista de Queen, se inspiró para escribirla en «Good Times», del grupo Chic. Bernard Edwards, cofundador de Chic, lo contó así en una entrevista: «Ese disco de Queen surgió porque el bajista de Queen pasó un tiempo con nosotros en nuestro estudio».

En el estudio, Deacon tocó casi todo: bajo, piano, guitarra eléctrica y palmas. Roger Taylor añadió un bucle de batería y Brian May aportó profundidad con su guitarra y un Eventide Harmonizer. No hay sintetizadores: todos los efectos salen del piano, las guitarras y la batería, con cintas reproducidas al revés a distintas velocidades. En las primeras actuaciones en directo era Taylor quien cantaba el estribillo, no Mercury, que es quien lo canta en la versión de estudio; con el tiempo el público acabó cantándolo solo.

El empujón definitivo para publicarlo como single lo dio Michael Jackson, que tras un concierto de Queen en Los Ángeles le sugirió a Freddie Mercury entre bastidores que lo sacaran. Salió, y se convirtió en el single más vendido del grupo, con más de siete millones de copias. Antes, su sonido estuvo a punto de quedar ligado a otra película: se usó en un montaje preliminar de Rocky III, hasta que fue sustituido por «Eye of the Tiger», de Survivor. Frankie Sullivan, guitarrista de Survivor, recordaba que Brian May le sacó el tema en 1984, tras un concierto en Los Ángeles, y que él se ofreció a enviarle una copia de la cinta, que todavía conserva.

Más reciente es su papel en la formación médica: el bajo va a unas 110 pulsaciones por minuto, así que se ha usado para enseñar a profesionales sanitarios el ritmo correcto de compresiones torácicas en la reanimación cardiopulmonar, entre 100 y 120 por minuto. En un estudio con veterinarios y enfermeras veterinarias mejoró la precisión del ritmo más que otros recursos como «Stayin' Alive», de los Bee Gees, aunque el contenido de la letra no se consideró del todo apropiado.
