La historia de «Snow on the beach»

La canción se escribió a tres manos: Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey y Jack Antonoff, el productor que trabaja con Swift desde su álbum 1989, la firmaron juntos, y fueron Swift y Antonoff quienes la produjeron. La expectación por el cruce entre ambas cantantes fue enorme durante las semanas previas a la salida de Midnights, cuando Swift fue desvelando el repertorio del disco de uno en uno.

Al publicarse, sin embargo, fans y prensa se hicieron la misma pregunta: dónde estaba Del Rey. Su voz se confundía con la de Swift, más propia de unos coros que de un dueto. Del Rey contó a Billboard que no sabía que era la única artista invitada del álbum y que, de haberlo sabido, habría cantado el segundo verso entero, como Swift quería, pero que en ese momento estaba más centrada en la producción que en las voces. En otra entrevista, con Harper's Bazaar, defendió que en la grabación se superpuso y encajó su voz con la de Swift.

La reacción del público llevó a una segunda versión. En mayo de 2023, dentro de The Til Dawn Edition, una reedición de Midnights, apareció «Snow on the Beach (More Lana Del Rey)», con Del Rey cantando por fin el segundo verso completo. La original llegó al número cuatro de la lista estadounidense, el puesto más alto que Del Rey había alcanzado allí.

El tema ha tenido después una vida curiosa: una versión instrumental de cuerdas sonó en la tercera temporada de la serie Bridgerton, en mayo de 2024. Y Swift la ha rescatado en las canciones sorpresa de su Eras Tour, en Las Vegas y en Ciudad de México, además de un mashup en Madrid con «I Look in People's Windows».
