La historia de «World in my eyes»

Martin Gore llegó a las sesiones con maquetas más sencillas y menos acabadas, y «World in My Eyes» fue el primer tema en el que el grupo trabajó ya en Dinamarca, aunque su grabación había empezado antes en Milán. Flood, el coproductor, no quedó contento con la versión que él y Alan Wilder habían grabado, y se lo dijo a Wilder y a Dave Gahan. A la mañana siguiente, Gore y Andy Fletcher entraron en el estudio con la misma opinión, así que Wilder y Flood pasaron medio día improvisando ideas. De ahí salieron la línea de bajo y la melodía, y cuando el resto volvió, la canción había cambiado por completo: al escucharla, se quedaron algo sorprendidos.

Gore recuerda que la maqueta original era algo más rápida y más obvia. Mientras grababan en Milán, Gahan se ausentó un par de días y el resto la convirtió en una pieza mucho más melancólica; al volver, con el jet lag encima, pensó que la habían arruinado, aunque medio día después ya decía que había quedado muy bien. Fletcher siempre ha señalado este tema como su favorito del grupo. El vídeo lo dirigió Anton Corbijn, y la canción se ha tocado en todas las giras de la banda desde 1990.
