La historia de «On the top of the world»

El tema nació como una celebración del propio grupo tras años intentando abrirse camino. Esa idea tuvo una segunda vida en su vídeo oficial, de noviembre de 2013, que satiriza la teoría conspirativa según la cual el alunizaje del Apolo 11 en 1969 fue un montaje rodado por Stanley Kubrick. En él, los miembros de Imagine Dragons interpretan a un grupo con aire de los Beatles que se hace pasar por astronautas para fingir el alunizaje, hasta que los fans invaden el plató y lo convierten en un concierto, para disgusto de Kubrick y del presidente Richard Nixon. Se grabó en Provo (Utah), la ciudad natal de la banda, con cameos de rostros vinculados a Provo y a la Universidad Brigham Young, como el actor Jon Heder, y con Aja Volkman, mujer del cantante Dan Reynolds, en el papel de esposa de su personaje.

Fuera de los discos también ha tenido una vida larga: se incluyó en las bandas sonoras de FIFA 13 y FIFA 23, y el grupo, seguidor de la saga desde años atrás, dijo que sería «muy divertido escuchar el tema mientras hacemos chilenas y gritamos a la pantalla». El coro infantil PS22 la cantó en la segunda investidura de Barack Obama y en 2017 Shell hizo su propia versión para su campaña Make The Future, con Jennifer Hudson, Pixie Lott, Luan Santana, Yemi Alade y Monali Thakur.
