La historia de «Say something»

Chris Stapleton y Justin Timberlake ya habían compartido escenario antes de grabar juntos: fue en los premios CMA de 2015, donde interpretaron «Tennessee Whiskey» y «Drink You Away». Cuando Timberlake lo reclutó para su quinto álbum, Man of the Woods, en principio Stapleton solo iba a escribir canciones. Pero en mitad de una sesión el cantante le pidió que entrara a grabar un verso. «Estaba como: ¿quieres que haga qué?», contó Stapleton. «Salió genial. Me lo pasé en grande con él; es una gran fuerza creativa».

El videoclip, dirigido por Arturo Perez Jr. y producido por La Blogothèque, se rodó en un solo plano en el edificio Bradbury de Los Ángeles, el mismo que aparece en Blade Runner. Para lograrlo hicieron falta 17 músicos y un coro de 60 personas, que grabaron audio y vídeo en directo en una única toma. El vídeo arranca con Timberlake solo en una sala, creando ritmos con un sampler Maschine, y sigue a la cámara mientras él se cuelga una guitarra acústica y sube en ascensor hasta encontrarse con Stapleton en una escalera. Ganó el premio al mejor vídeo en directo en los UK Music Video Awards de 2018 y acumula más de 420 millones de visitas en YouTube.

El estreno de la canción fue notable: debutó en el número 9 de la lista estadounidense Billboard Hot 100, lo que supuso el decimonoveno top 10 de Timberlake en solitario y el primero de Stapleton. También recibió una nominación al Grammy a la mejor interpretación pop de dúo o grupo.

En directo, ambos la tocaron en el programa de Jimmy Fallon, en el episodio emitido justo después de la Super Bowl, y en los Brit Awards de 2018. Después, la canción se mantuvo en el repertorio de Timberlake: sonó en todas las fechas de su gira Man of the Woods Tour y siguió apareciendo en The Forget Tomorrow World Tour, en 2024.
