La historia de «The time»

Antes de que viera la luz oficialmente, will.i.am, miembro del grupo, preguntó en Twitter quién quería que adelantara el single de The Beginning y lo colgó en Dipdive. La base del estribillo es «(I've Had) The Time of My Life», el tema que Bill Medley y Jennifer Warnes cantaban en la película Dirty Dancing, así que Franke Previte, John DeNicola y Donald Markowitz aparecen acreditados como coautores; el verso «Yes I swear it's the truth» se cambió por «And I swear this is true». Fergie le vio una coincidencia divertida: la canción le recordaba a Jennifer Grey, la actriz de Dirty Dancing, justo cuando esta participaba en Dancing with the Stars.

Previte, que ganó un Óscar por coescribir el original, se mostró encantado con el préstamo: «Me reafirma que la canción es transgeneracional. Ha pasado a la siguiente generación de forma enorme».

El parecido con otra música también dio que hablar. Deadmau5 recibió mensajes en Twitter señalando la similitud del tema con una remezcla suya, la de «You and I» de Medina, y contó en Facebook que reconoció el hi-hat y su patrón, fue a buscar su mezcla instrumental y «ahí estaba otra vez, mirándome a la cara». Aclaró que no era una acusación contra el grupo, sino un dato curioso más sobre el sampling en la música electrónica.

El vídeo, dirigido por Rich Lee, convierte las cabezas de los integrantes en pantallas y avatares mediante voxelización. En directo, los American Music Awards de 2010 los vieron salir de unas cápsulas amarillas que brillaban en la oscuridad, con un momento de apuro para Fergie cuando la puerta de la suya se quedó atascada, y también la tocaron en el descanso de la Super Bowl XLV. En 2011 fue el octavo single digital más vendido del mundo, con 7,3 millones de copias. Nueve años después volvieron a interpretarla en la clausura de los Juegos del Sudeste Asiático, con J. Rey Soul en el lugar de Fergie.
