La historia de «Killing an arab»

«Killing an Arab» nació de un propósito muy concreto de Robert Smith, compositor del grupo: condensar en una especie de poema breve los momentos clave de L'Étranger, la novela de Albert Camus publicada en 1942. El título y la letra remiten a ese libro, en el que un personaje dispara a un árabe en una playa. El título generó controversia desde su publicación. Smith lo achacó al desconocimiento de la novela y dijo: «Simplemente ocurrió que el personaje principal del libro había matado a un árabe, pero podría haber sido un escandinavo o un inglés».

La polémica volvió en Estados Unidos. En octubre de 1986, un locutor universitario presentó el tema de forma insensible en la radio y Smith y Elektra Records pidieron a las emisoras que dejaran de emitirlo; como solución intermedia, el recopilatorio Standing on a Beach se vendió con una pegatina que advertía contra un uso racista. Chris Parry, productor del single, comentó que si se hubiera llamado «The Stranger» no habrían tenido ese problema. Con los años la banda cambió la letra en directo por «Kissing an Arab» o «Killing Another», y en 2022 cerró la última fecha de su gira con «Killing Another».
