La historia de «Yeah!»

A finales de 2003, Usher entregó su cuarto álbum a Arista Records, pero L.A. Reid, entonces presidente del sello, consideró que le faltaba un single potente. El cantante volvió al estudio y llamó al productor Lil Jon, que lo recuerda así: «Necesitaba un single. Tenían "Burn", "Burn" era potente, pero necesitaban ese primer monstruo poderoso. Ahí entré yo».

La base de «Yeah!» nació de un malentendido. Lil Jon había producido quince temas para Mystikal por encargo de Jive Records; el rapero eligió solo dos y los descartes pasaron a otros sellos. Sin que Lil Jon lo supiera, Jive entregó uno a Petey Pablo y acabó siendo «Freek-a-Leek». Él, convencido de que seguía libre, se lo dio a Usher: de ahí salió una primera versión de «Yeah!». Cuando Pablo le puso «Freek-a-Leek», el productor descubrió el enredo y quiso hacer más temas para él, pero Pablo no soltó la canción, así que Lil Jon volvió al estudio a crear un reemplazo igual de pegadizo.

«Burn» estaba reservado como primer single y hasta tenía un vídeo en marcha, pero Usher dudaba. Lil Jon, que también es DJ, aprovechó el parón navideño de las discográficas para filtrar el tema entre pinchadiscos de todo el país; en enero, sin intervención del sello, ya sumaba miles de reproducciones en radio. El respaldo fue tan rotundo que «Yeah!» pasó a ser el primer single. Meses después sería «Burn» el que lo desbancara tras doce semanas consecutivas en lo más alto del Hot 100 estadounidense.

El vídeo, dirigido por Mr. X, que ya había rodado clips para Usher, se filmó en dos días en una galería de arte vacía de Los Ángeles, con cuarenta extras bailando junto al cantante y el recuerdo del «Rock with You» de Michael Jackson como referencia. Usher aportó pasos como el Rockaway y el Thunderclap, que Mr. X había aprendido en Jamaica; el Rockaway acabó influyendo en el vídeo de «Lean Back», de Fat Joe y Terror Squad. Ganó los premios al mejor vídeo dance y al mejor vídeo masculino en los MTV Video Music Awards de 2004, y en YouTube acumula más de 1.160 millones de visitas.
